AI partners aren’t just futuristic fiction anymore—they’re sliding into DMs, listening to heartbreak rants, and even replacing real relationships. Whether you see them as the future of love or just a temporary glitch in human connection, one thing’s clear: we’re no longer just dating people—we’re dating technology.

“Socialising” often means curating Instagram posts for keeping entire friendships alive through DMs. The rise of AI companions isn’t just a trend—it’s a wake-up call. Are we building connections, or just coding them?
These AI besties are taking over Gen-Z convos. They chat with you, remember your preferences, and some even mimic emotions—basically, they’re coded to hype you up or listen to your rants, drama-free. “I’d rather rant to my AI bot than my girlfriend—at least it won’t find new ways to roast me”, shared Aman Srivastava*, a 22-year-old student of Political Science from Dyal Singh College, Delhi.
Replika, Kuki AI, Anima AI—these bots aren’t just glorified Siri clones. They’re being sold as AI besties, therapists, and even romantic partners. These apps are free with basic features, but premium plans unlock more customisation, chat and role-play features.
You can customise their vibe, have deep conversations, and some users actually catch feelings. No wonder these apps have racked up over 30 million downloads worldwide, averaging a 4.6-star rating on the App Store and Google Play.
In India, this AI companion market is booming, with projections to hit US$ 7.9 billion by 2030, growing at a whopping 40.4% annually from 2025 to 2030. This data was showcased on the Grand View Research website on an article titled ‘India Ai Companion Market Size & Outlook, 2024-2030’ written by multiple analysts.

When asked about whether he would switch to these virtual buddies, Swetabh Kumar, a 14-year-old from St. Columba’s School in Delhi, isn’t buying the AI hype. “Sure, they won’t judge you, but they also don’t feel real. I’d rather not risk my privacy just to talk to a bot.”
And that’s the thing—human connection isn’t just about words, it’s about presence and feelings. Imagine a late-night phone call with your best friend where you don’t even need to speak because they just get it. Or the warmth of a hug after a long day—something no AI can replicate, no matter how well it’s programmed. Real emotions don’t come with a great code.
But let’s be real—not everyone is sceptical. Apps like CHAI promise virtual characters that “think and reply like real characters, complete with authentic voices,” as their app description says. Then there’s Romantic AI Girlfriend Chat, which lets you design your own girlfriend—one that’s here to “support you in tough times, laugh at your jokes – drama-free, zero ghosting.” It’s designed to be your “soulmate.”

And if that wasn’t wild enough, the app goes full fantasy mode, promising that “if they want to feel like a hero, they’ll be your stunning heroine. “Unlike others, she’s truly dedicated to you,” it adds.
Aman* eventually got into CHAI, saying it helped with loneliness and anxiety. CHAI offers free services with message limits; a paid subscription removes restrictions and provides unlimited chats. He even gave Romantic AI Girlfriend Chat a shot. Would he date an AI? “Not sure. I mean, it’s still not real.” So, even the loyal AI users aren’t fully convinced.
Gunika Garg, a 19-year-old Fashion Communication student at Pearl Academy, New Delhi, isn’t sold on the idea too. “I don’t think AI can give me the emotional support or warmth I need; they’re just not for me.” And honestly, she’s got a point. AI bots can’t actually feel, no matter how well they mimic emotions. But let’s be real—when you’re lonely or fresh out of a breakup, those flashy app promises can be tempting. A “drama-free, zero-ghosting soulmate”? Sounds ideal—until you remember it’s just code pretending to care.
AI companions are fun, no doubt. They won’t ghost you, won’t judge you, and will always be there when you need a rant session at 3 a.m. But let’s be real—there’s a difference between a deep convo with your bestie and a chatbot trained to mirror your emotions.
A best friend won’t just respond based on an algorithm—they’ll laugh with you, call you out when needed, and stick around even when the WiFi’s down. A partner’s touch, the unspoken comfort in their presence, the messy but real moments—that’s what makes human connection irreplaceable. AI can mimic words, but it can’t truly understand the weight of silence, the warmth of a hug, or the spark of a shared memory.
Maybe AI relationships are just a phase, or maybe they’ll stick around for longer than we expect. But can they really compete with real human connections? For now, the answer seems to be no—but hey, what you choose to believe is totally up to you.
