Pre-Loved, Re-Loved

Gen Z’s fashion playbook is the next bible for the trend landscape. They are mixing eras, breaking rules, and making the uncool cool. Gone are the days of “buy now, wear once”. Gen Z is all about style with a side of sustainability. As fast fashion waste, and budget-conscious shopping take centre stage, young trendsetters are ditching brand-new for pre-loved, proving that second-hand is the new first choice. because style should never be boring.

Thrifting has gained immense popularity over the past few years, largely due to its affordability, sustainability, and unique finds. Instead of shopping at traditional retail stores, many consumers are turning to second-hand platforms like Depop, The Thrift Cart, and Instagram thrift stores. These platforms offer carefully curated selections of vintage, streetwear, and designer pieces, making it easier for buyers to find trendy, and affordable options while reducing textile waste.

Kayna Gandhi, 20, fashion communication student at Pearl Academy, shared, “I think thrifting is not only budget-friendly but also a great way to reduce overconsumption. It’s also exciting to find something unique that no one else has.” For instance, “I bought a Y2k butterfly top for ₹400 from an Instagram store named ReSkinn. It was only selling one piece, on first come first serve basis. I literally set a timer, so I could be the first one to comment the second it drops.” She feels, this adds a bit extra adrenaline, and dopamine than normal shopping. “It was fun. I got the top, and the delivery was super-fast. It also adds a sense of exclusivity,” she added.

Another respondent, Arunima Mehrotra,19, again a fashion communication student at Pearl Academy, highlighted the economic value factor, stating, she mostly buys from Instagram shops. It helps her stay within a budget, while still keeping up with the ongoing trends. She also shared one of her experiences with us. She recently bought Zara heels from a store called Grunge Girl. It was originally priced at ₹2,995 but she got them for only ₹900.

The growing interest in recycling is making an impact on the industry. More consumers are opting to buy fewer new clothes and instead investing in pre- loved items. However, it isn’t without its challenges. Many thrifters have voiced concerns about certain drawbacks.

Kayna also metioned that, “Finding the right size is a struggle sometimes. Most pieces are one-of-a-kind, so if it doesn’t fit, you’re out of luck. Also, some stores overprice their items, making it almost as expensive as new items, which defeats the purpose.” Additionally, Arunima highlighted, “It consumes a lot of time. You have to dig through racks and online listings to find something worthwhile.”

Thrifting isn’t a just a trend, it’s a thrift-lution. From scoring one-of-a-kind gems to giving fast fashion a well-deserved goodbye, young shoppers are making vintage their first choice. With resale platforms booming and sustainability in style, fast fashion is facing tough competition as reclaimed fashion continues to rise.
